one nation, one election

"By the end of this month, we plan to organise more than 25 webinars," said a party leader.

New Delhi: The BJP will organise more than 25 webinars in the coming few days on the subject of "One Nation, One Election". Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been strongly advocating for all elections to be held simultaneously and in view of this, the party's endeavour is to garner wide support across the country through such events.

According to party sources, these webinar programmes to be organised through digital means will be linked to senior BJP leaders, apart from prominent education and law personalities. "One nation, one election" means simultaneous elections from local bodies to assemblies and Lok Sabha elections.

"By the end of this month, we plan to organise more than 25 webinars," said a party leader.

After coming to power in 2014, Modi has been strongly advocating the idea of "one nation, one election". He believes that the election day is hampered by the process of development.

At the 80th All India Conference of Presiding Officers recently, the Prime Minister emphasized the idea of "one nation, one election" and described it as India's necessity. "One nation, one election is not just a matter of discussion, but it is the need of India. Every few months, there are big elections taking place somewhere in India. You are well aware of the impact it has on developmental activities. It is necessary to have a thorough study and brainstorm on this issue.

It may be noted that the Law Commission under Justice B S Chauhan had recommended a few years ago that elections to lok sabha and state assemblies should be held simultaneously to save government money. The Commission had recommended amendments to the Constitution and electoral laws.
